Students and Worms at Work

by Judy Chaddick
Espanola Elementary School, Espanola NM

Last May the staff and children decided they wanted to have a butterfly and hummingbird garden in front of the school. Our custodian with help from the students built an adobe wall to set the boundaries for the garden. Each class was involved in sheet mulching this area - spreading layers of wet newspaper and wet manure with wet straw on top. Red worms were purchased. During an all school Earth Day assembly, each class "planted" some worms. Every child made a newspaper flower with good wishes for the garden and fed it also to the garden. We sang an Earth Day song and served punch. The children anticipated coming back in the fall to plant the bulbs and perennials.
